My name is Kurtis O’Byrne, and I created Roman’s K9 from a lifelong passion for working-line dogs and a commitment to real, results-based training.
I was trained under Hoz Othman and the Shield K9 philosophy, a balanced training system built on structure, clarity, and communication. Over the years, I’ve worked with everything from high-drive German Shepherds to family companions, helping dogs and their owners build trust and control through a calm, consistent approach.
My methods are balanced, positive and motivational the vast majority of the time, but always rooted in accountability and respect. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all training. Every dog is an individual, and my job is to bring out the best in them by providing the structure and guidance they need to thrive.
Whether the goal is reliable off-leash obedience, better behavior at home, or developing the full potential of a working dog, my focus remains the same: building calm, confident, and fulfilled dogs that owners can truly enjoy living with.
Training Programs
Each dog is unique, and so is the training approach. My programs are designed to bring structure, communication, and confidence to every dog–owner relationship.
Every dog is different, but the foundation for success is always the same: structure, clarity, and communication.
I follow a balanced training approach rooted in the Shield K9 philosophy taught by Hoz Othman, combining positive reinforcement with accountability. My focus is on teaching dogs how to make good choices, not just follow commands.
Training begins with clear communication through leash work, body language, and reward timing to help dogs understand what’s expected. As they progress, I introduce tools such as the prong collar or e-collar to refine communication and build reliability under distraction. These tools are never used out of frustration but as part of a fair, structured system that promotes confidence and stability.
My approach is overwhelmingly positive when it comes to training. Sure, anybody can “make“ a dog do things with pressure…but REAL dog training is when you condition the dog to genuinely want to work for the handler. That’s the “secret sauce” of training. . Dogs thrive when leadership and boundaries are consistent and when communication is clear. The result is a dog that’s not just obedient but truly stable, capable of handling the real world with confidence, enthusiasm and control.
